Tom is a PhD candidate at the department of Physiology at the Radboudumc. He completed this master’s in Human Biology at the Radboud University. In his first master project, he first used pharmacological therapies to alleviate microvascular injury by ischemia-reperfusion. He then persued his graduation project to study the loss of cardioprotection by ischemic conditioning in models associated with comorbidities of cardiovascular disease. Both projects involved the ex vivo perfused rat heart as a model. In his current project, Tom aims to develop a new, animal experiment free model to study exercise physiology and pathology by implementing pacing strategies in engineered heart tissue.
In this free time, Tom likes to cook, take care of his many plants, play (board games with his friends, and (occasionally) fitness.
